In case padlocks on a bridge might already be feeling old, a wire strung across the end of a side street near the river has become home to pairs of shoes.
Mostly sneakers, tied together by their laces and flung up onto the wire, it might be seen as a bizarre street decoration until you realize that Ljubljana is a college town. What could be more normal?
Hah ha! Didn’t this concept start in the US though? I was under the impression that it was a trend in some gangland areas. The trainers (sorry, sneakers! 🙂 ) may well denote gang areas or something, as I recall.
It may have started here in the States, but I live in the suburbs and around here, there’s usually only one lonely pair hanging on a wire over some back road.
I’ve never tried it, but it looks like it would require several attempts before the shoes find their perch.
I’m assuming the gangs have moved on to something more sinister than trainer hanging but I don’t know any gangbangers to ask!
